Dealing with Chronic Pain

Pain is a natural human experience that can occur due to injury, chronic stress, or medical complications. People who have to live with chronic pain do not generally regard themselves as needing to see a psychiatrist or a psychologist, or may in some cases believe that a referral to a psychiatrist might indicate that their doctor believes that their pain is 'in their head' and may not be real. This is not the case at all.
Chronic pain can affect a person's outlook on life. Statistics show that there is a high correlation of some psychiatric disorders with chronic pain.
-
40-60% of patients with chronic pain experience depression.
-
40-60% of patients with chronic pain experience anxiety.
-
10% of patients with chronic pain have PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
-
Up to 20% of patients with chronic pain have drug or alcohol problems

Chronic pain, the uncertainty about the future, the intense flare ups, and the randomness of flares can cause an individual to fall into "thinking traps" and get stuck in cycles that can ultimately make the pain harder and more difficult to cope with. Chronic pain can lead to a much higher risk of developing other mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
Mid Ohio Psychiatry works closely with Pain Management Physicians when helping patients with chronic pain, so that all aspects of treating and dealing with chronic pain can be addressed. We use a holistic evidence-based approach which integrates a range of different therapeutic techniques that can help you cope with and manage your chronic pain.
If you suffer from chronic pain symptoms that have not been successfully treated with interventions such as; injections or radiofrequency ablation and have failed conservative therapies including; physical therapy, chiropractic care and acupuncture - your pain management provider may suggest a Spinal Cord Stimulator Trial or Intrathecal Pain Pump Trial.
Most insurance plans require a psychological evaluation or psychiatric evaluation prior to authorizing the trial. Mid Ohio Psychiatry offers same day appointments for all Spinal Cord Stimulator and Pain Pump psychiatric evaluations. The evaluation may be done via Telemedicine (audio/video).
To schedule an appointment please call Mid Ohio Psychiatry at (614) 323-4339. Please fax referrals to (614) 376-0217.
